Here’s the problem: My cat’s chakras do not follow the ancient wisdom regarding chakras. She does have seven major energy centers (and many minor ones besides, as we all do), but they don’t follow the traditional rainbow pattern.
Chin-ai, my cat, is quite old and her health is somewhat fragile. We recently did some focused energy work on her and she seems to be feeling better. As I was looking at her the other night I was delighted to see that the four chakras in the trunk of her body, which had been dull and dim, were glowing brightly. But then it struck me that the colors were all wrong. Her heart was bright yellow, her solar plexus bright orange, her abdomen a rich blue, and her root rich green. (As I’m writing this I’ve checked the colors of her upper three chakras and they are more “normal,” her crown is bright white, her brow is rich purple, and her throat is aqua blue.) It never occurred to me that this was an indication of trouble because the colors were all so bright and healthy. But it did strike me as odd.
So, the question is this: why are her colors “wrong?” Or are they?
In both new-age and Eastern mystical writings (primarily Hindu and Buddist) descriptions of the chakra system are pretty consistent. There are seven major chakras, or energy centers, that align vertically along the center of the body. Starting at the bottom, this is what tradition tells us about these chakras:
- The first chakra is located at the base of the spine, it’s color is red, and it is associated with groundedness, a sense of belonging in the world, and connection to our family or “tribe.”
- The second chakra is located in the pelvis, is associated with the reproductive organs, its color is orange, and it is associated with creativity, sexuality, and reproduction.
- The third chakra is located in the belly or solar plexus, is associated with the adrenal glands, its color is yellow, and it is associated with self esteem, personal power.
- The fourth chakra is located in the chest, is associated with the heart and the thymus gland, its color is green (or sometimes pink), and it is associated with emotions, relationships, and self-love.
- The fifth chakra is located in the throat, is associated with the thyroid gland, its color is aqua blue, and it is associated with both our physical and metaphorical voice, communication, and hearing.
- The sixth chakra is located at the forehead (the “third eye), is associated with the pineal gland, its color is indigo blue, and it is associated with our intuition, inner knowing, and psychic ability.
- The seventh chakra is located at the crown of the head, is associated with the pituitary gland, its color is purple (or sometimes white), and it is associated with our connection to spirit.
Since these descriptions are so consistent, and have been for millennia, one might assume that there is some sort of universal truth associated with them. It must be that every living creature’s chakras are always rainbow hued and always located in exactly the same position. But, what if they’re not?
As I said, the first thing that struck me when I looked at my cat was the bright, healthy nature of her chakra colors. In my experience the quality of the color is at least as important as the color itself. And, she is behaving as if she is feeling much better than she was. So, I don’t think that the unusual line up of chakra colors is indicating further ill health, beyond old age.
One thing that I know can affect the way we perceive colors, whether in the energy body or a photograph, is the colors/energies of our own aura. As I look out on the world I am sensing other being’s energies through the matrix of my own. The interplay of those energies in my perception may result in my perceiving very different colors than the person next to me is perceiving since their energies are different from mine.
I know that I have a lot more to learn about the energy systems of the beings around me, especially since my abilities seem to be changing and expanding almost daily. But for now, my conclusion is that my cat’s colors are perfect for her and that the bright luminous quality of them indicate a greater degree of health than she had before our healing work.

I think, maybe we are all changing so much is it possible that her chakra colors are evolving also? I know there are all these new colors and their frequencies coming in–silver, magenta, etc. Maybe your beautiful cat companion is changing and you are seeing it. Isn’t it possibly wild all the eye changes we are experiencing and seeing?
Thanks so much for your comment Ronni! I would certainly not rule out the possibility that my cat is showing signs of evolving through her chakra colors. My husband and I have always had very special relationships with our animals and believe them to be not only friends but Guides in furry form. This particular animal friend has been an amazing teacher and protector for many years. She constantly amazes me!

Hi. My chakras are all wrong too. I am getting checked out by a specialist, but I left before we could go into my weird colors.
It was almost as if I was flipped upside down, however the bottom four were all bluish.
Have you learned more about what the colors mean if they are in the wrong place? I would so love to know what to make of this. I can’t wait until I see my specialist.
Hi Lisa! I’m still working to understand all the ways that our chakra colors are affected. My sense about your lower chakras is that there is a major attachment suppressing the energies in your lower system. Sometimes when this happens its a bit like an energy blanket has gotten wrapped around you and is both suppressing and feeding off of your natural energies, thereby causing changes that some of us perceive as color changes. I would very much like to hear what your specialist has to say. If you’re willing to share it could be a wonderful learning opportunity to both of us.

Could a cat that lives with humans evolve his soul to a point that he can incarnate in a human body in his next life?
Hi, I have a related question – could chakras be the right colour but in the wrong place? I have been doing some meditation around my base chakra. I certainly see it as red, but after some time meditating, I felt that it wasn’t where it should be, but was floating outside my body, somewhere nearby (in front of my lower stomach, or sometimes at the side), but certainly outside my body. There seemed to be a greyish void where it should be.
I tried visualising putting it back where it should be, but it didn’t want to go. I tried going down from my chest area, and it went as far as my upper abdomen and then skimmed off again, then I tried moving it in from below and it still seemed unwilling.
This all sounds very odd I’m sure…
